AREA INFORMATION Fishing
McCall, Idaho has many fine fly fishing opportunities. In town is the North Fork of the Payette River, which has both wild and stocked Rainbow Trout.
High country lakes are plentiful and the book, Hiking and Angling in McCall is a great source of information. It's available at The HUB.
Tributaries to the Salmon have healthy populations of Cutthroats, Bull Trout, and Rainbows. On most of these streams, it's rare to see another fisherman. It's not uncommon to catch a number of 15-18" Cutthroats and the Bulls go much larger. For an experienced local guide, go to Fly Fish McCall. For information and gear stop by The HUB in downtown McCall.
The main Salmon is driftboat/jet boat river, though folks wade and fish the banks. Guides operate out of the Riggins area for Steelhead & Salmon fishing, and one of the best being Dave Bingaman of Exodus Wilderness Adventures. For the current river & Steelhead fishing report, click here.
Little known to the outside world, the Little Salmon River is another area treasure, with a strong spring Steelhead run, accessible for both spin fisherman and fly fisherman. The seasons for Steelhead on the Little Salmon are late fall/early winter when the fish move up into the little river before wintering over on the main Salmon, and in springtime once flows are high enough for the Steelhead to gain access up from the mouth. This is usually mid March to mid April and lasts for just a few weeks. Once the fish are to the top of the system, there's about a 2 week window for phenomenal Steelhead fishing.
Another great nearby fishery to enjoy in Spring when few other places are fishable for trout, is the Owyhee River in southeastern Oregon. Just a few hours drive from McCall, this desert tailwater fishery can provide fantastic brown trout fishing and also offers great camping along the river, and a hot spring for an apres fishing soak.
